Florence
The capital of Italy's Tuscany region, Florence is renowned for its wealth of Renaissance art and architecture. Its most iconic sight is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower designed by Giotto. The Galleria dell'Accademia displays Michelangelo's renowned 'David' sculpture, while the Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli's 'The Birth of Venus' and works by da Vinci.

Florence bustles with activity year-round, but spring is widely regarded as the ideal time to visit. As winter's gloom gives way to warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours, the city comes alive. Outdoor cafes and restaurants reclaim the sidewalks and piazzas, while the city's gardens beckon visitors to stroll amidst the blossoming flora.

The lightweight, breathable dress I wore was perfect for travel - comfortable, easy to pack, and complemented by the stylish sandals while exploring on foot. The fabric's UPF 40 rating and ability to wick away perspiration kept me cool and comfortable, which was a huge bonus as a menopausal woman.

We decided to explore the hilly Oltrarno neighborhood on foot. The name 'Oltrarno', meaning 'the other side of the Arno', refers to the area south of the Arno River, across from the historic center around the Duomo. Crossing the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge takes you right into the heart of this charming neighborhood, which is filled with incredible historic sites, expansive gardens, artistic traditions, and unparalleled views of Florence.

As we strolled through, the cascading wisteria over the passageway of Villa Bardini's garden created a stunning display of pink and purple, framing one of the city's most captivating vistas.

The location of Hotel In Piazza della Signoria is perfect for sightseeing, shopping, and immersing yourself in the vibrant heart of the city. The Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio are right on your doorstep, and the Duomo is just a short walk away. While the immediate area is filled with restaurants and bars, venturing across the river to the more authentic Oltrarno district can help you avoid the tourist traps.

The hotel offers an excellent breakfast spread served around a vast oval table on the third floor. Freshly squeezed juice, homemade cakes and croissants, fruit, cheese, cold cuts, and made-to-order eggs and bacon are all available. Guests can also help themselves to tea, coffee, and even a beer in the reception area's self-serve kitchen station, making it easy to relax and recharge.

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival, which pays homage to an ancient harvest celebration from the Middle Ages, is held annually at the Opera Theater in Florence between April and June. When attending this crowded event, it's advisable to carry a cross-body bag to deter pickpockets and safeguard your belongings.

The best time to visit Florence is in the spring and autumn when the weather is pleasant but not too hot.
